Instagram users can upload images and photos and apply photo effects like filters, frames, retro and vintage colors, and then share the pictures on the same network or other like Facebook, Tumblr, Flickr, Twitter etc. A distinctive feature of the application is that it gives a square shape to photographs in honor of the Kodak Instamatic cameras and Polaroid, contrasting with the aspect ratio 16:9 currently using most mobile phone cameras. Today, photos can be horizontally and vertically without the use of white borders.
Instagram development began in San Francisco by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. The product was launched in the Apple App Store on October 6, 2010 named Instagram. Shortly after launch, Josh Riedel joined the team as the Communication Manager. Shayne Sweeney joined the team in November 2010 as an engineer and Jessica Zollman was hired as a Community Evangelist in August 2011.
In January 2011, Instagram added hashtags to help users discover other users photos shared on the same topic. Instagram encouraged users to add hashtags relevant and specific, rather than labeling the words “picture” in order to make the most popular photographs attract a greater number of fanes and get more likes. In September 2011 version 2.0 was launched on the App Store, it included new filters, live option to apply blur effects to specific areas, editing high-resolution, optional borders, button image rotation and a refresh button.
Impact on the Internet
In December 2010 Instagram had a million registered users. In June 2011 Instagram announced five million users and managed to pass ten million in September of the same year. Instagram announced that 100 million photos were uploaded to its service from July 2011. The total number reached 150 million photos in August. On March 11, 2012, Instagram announced it had reached 27 million registered users. However, in early September 2012, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, announced that the social network already has more than 100 million registered users.
In May 2012, every second 58 photos uploaded. The total number of photos uploaded had exceeded one billion.
